Scientists discover fluorescent ruby-like gemstones on Mars

Scientists have been surprised after small, glowing ruby-like stones were discovered on the planet Mars. 

NASA's Perseverance rover has discovered tiny crystals of the mineral corundum. This mineral is the same mineral that forms rubies and sapphires on Earth. It is the first time the mineral has been identified on Mars.

The crystals are very small, less than 0.2 mm. When hit with lasers by the rover's instruments, they glow brightly.

On Earth, corundum is usually associated with tectonic processes, but on Mars there are no tectonic plates. Scientists think it was formed by meteorite impacts, which create very high temperatures and pressures.

This discovery provides new information about the geological history of Mars and suggests that the planet may have been more chemically and thermally active than previously thought. /CNA
