Popocatépetl, known to locals as “Don Goyo,” is one of Mexico’s most famous and fearsome volcanoes. At over 5,400 meters above sea level, it dominates the skyline of the states of Puebla, Morelos, and the State of Mexico and forms, together with Iztaccíhuatl, a pair of iconic mountains of the region, closely linked to indigenous history, culture, and myths.
Its almost perfect conical silhouette, often crowned by columns of white smoke, makes it recognizable from tens of kilometers away. This constant smoke is not just a natural phenomenon: for the inhabitants of the area, it symbolizes the power of a “sleeping giant” that could wake up at any moment. Popocatépetl is an active volcano, with occasional eruptions and gas emissions, making scientific monitoring essential for Mexican authorities.
Geological origin and formation
Popocatépetl has a geological history that spans over 730,000 years. Before it, the area saw three previous volcanoes: Nexpayantla, Ventorrillo, and El Fraile, each with its own cycle of eruptions and partial or total collapses. This sequence of volcanoes formed the modern Popocatépetl cone, leaving behind ash deposits, lava flows, and the diverse landforms that characterize the region.
Over the centuries, its activity has been intermittent and unexpected. From the eruptions of December 2000 that forced the evacuation of cities near the cone, to the ashfall episodes of May and July 2013 that also affected Mexico City, Popocatépetl has repeatedly demonstrated its power and inherent danger.
Monitoring and civil security
The National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred) monitors the volcano's activity continuously. Cameras, seismic sensors, gas analysis and satellites are used to observe any changes in the behavior of "Don Goyo". The color-coded volcanic alert system indicates the level of danger and the measures to be taken: from restricting access to high-risk areas to evacuation plans for surrounding communities.
In recent decades, climbing and activities near the crater have been restricted for safety reasons, but safety areas and observation trails remain open to tourists and researchers, offering amazing panoramic views of the cone and the surrounding area.
The legend of eternal love
Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl are the protagonists of one of the most famous Mexican legends. According to it, Iztaccíhuatl was a beautiful and intelligent princess, while Popocatépetl was a brave and loyal warrior. The tragedy occurred when the princess thought she was alone after the death of her lover. In the end, the gods transformed the couple into mountains: Iztaccíhuatl became the “Sleeping Woman,” covered in snow, and Popocatépetl, an active volcano that emits smoke and fire, eternally guards his lover.
This legend symbolizes loyalty, passion, and tragedy, and is linked to the natural activity of the volcano: Iztaccíhuatl represents tranquility and eternity, while Popocatépetl represents passion and strength. In this way, the myth connects geography with the collective imagination and emphasizes the emotional connection between the inhabitants and the landscape.
Cultural and artistic value
Beyond legends, Popocatépetl has been part of Mexican history for centuries. It has inspired painters, poets, writers and musicians and continues to appear in institutional logos, local emblems and tourism campaigns. It is also a point of reference for millions of people who live nearby, becoming a symbol of national identity and pride.
In academia, geologists and environmentalists study ash deposits, lava flows, and ecosystems around the volcano. This allows scientists to predict its behavior, while the surrounding nature attracts visitors and researchers from all over Mexico and the world.
Attractions and visits
Despite the danger, the Popocatépetl area remains blessed with natural beauty. Pine forests, waterfalls, hiking trails, and lookout points offer stunning views of the cone and Iztaccíhuatl. Visitors are advised to follow official protocols, check volcanic activity bulletins, and respect restricted areas.
For those who cannot physically get close, many online platforms and media broadcast real-time views of the crater, enabling observation of Don Goyo's activity from home.
Popocatépetl is not just a towering mountain: it is a living character in the history, mythology and daily life of Mexico. It embodies the natural force, mystery, passion and respect of the peoples who live in its shadow. An active giant, a cultural symbol and a landmark that continues to inspire and warn every day./ CNA
