Hiding place with charcoal sketches/ Michelangelo's "secret

Michelangelo's "Secret Room," or Stanza Segreta, is a small room beneath the Medici Chapels in Florence, Italy, containing charcoal drawings believed to be by the master artist.

Rediscovered in 1975, it served as a hiding place for Michelangelo in 1530 as he escaped Pope Clement VII and the Medici family. The room was recently opened to the public in a very limited and restricted manner after decades of closure, offering a rare glimpse into his creative process.

A small and hidden room, measuring about 10 meters by 3 meters, was previously a coal bunker before its discovery.

Michelangelo used the room to escape the wrath of the Pope and the Medici after the Medici's temporary expulsion from Florence, due to his republican sympathies.

During his time in hiding, he used the white walls of the room to draw sketches and drafts of his famous works.

In 1975, while work was underway to create a new exit for the Medici Chapels, museum director Paolo Dal Poggetto discovered the room.

After remaining closed for decades, the room has only recently begun to open to the public in a very controlled manner.

Access is extremely limited due to the fragile nature of the drawings, with small groups, limited time slots and no permission for flash photography./CNA
