"Doomsday Clock/ Scientists set a new time for the end of the world"

The 'Doomsday Clock' has been moved closer to midnight than ever by scientists, a change that is said to indicate we are approaching the end of the world.

The clock, which is a metaphor for the dangers facing humanity, updates based on perceptions of how close people are to the destruction of the world, with midnight symbolizing that point.

The current time has moved to 85 seconds to midnight, from 89, which was the previous record for the closest time to midnight.

Alexandra Bell, CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which determines the time, said nuclear concerns were at the top of the list for scientists, who cited aggressive behavior by nuclear powers Russia, China and the United States.

She also pointed to Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine, the bombing of Iran by the US and Israel, and border clashes between India and Pakistan. /CNA
