Who is the chess champion who could become the next president of Hungary?

Hungary's Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, took many people by surprise when he announced that he would ask one of the world's most famous chess legends to become the country's next president.

Chess grandmaster Judit Polgár might seem like an unusual choice to take on the largely ceremonial role of Hungary's next head of state.

However, Magyar argues that her status as someone whose name is "synonymous with talent and perseverance" makes her a good fit at a time when the country needs "unity, peace and a president that every Hungarian can be proud of."

Born in Budapest in 1976, Polgár has had an extraordinary career in the male-dominated world of chess, defeating some of the game's greatest competitors of all time, including Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen, as well as defeating 11 male world champions.

Polgár won her first international tournament when she was 9 years old and became the world's top-ranked female player at the age of 12, holding the title for 26 years until she retired in 2014.

In 1991, she became the youngest chess grandmaster in the world up to that point at just 15 years old, and also won the gold medal at the Women's Chess Olympiad in 1988 and 1990.

She is also the only woman to have passed the 2700 rating threshold, considered by many to be the distinction of a chess super grandmaster, ultimately achieving a career high of 2735 and the position of number 8 in the world in the International Chess Federation rankings.
