Following the incident, Canadian authorities have been accused of inaction and poor forest management.

But experts say the reality is much more complex. According to them, most fires are so remote and widespread that effectively extinguishing the flames is practically impossible.

About half of Canada's wildfires, like the one currently raging in northern Ontario, are burning in uninhabited areas or in areas where there are only small indigenous communities, Michael Flanigan, a fire management expert at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia, told the New York Times.

These areas are usually only accessible by air, as there is no road infrastructure to allow direct access for firefighters.
