Tragedy in Peru/ Truck falls off cliff, 14 people die

At least 14 people were killed and five others injured on Thursday after a van veered off the road and fell into a ravine in northern Peru.

The news was confirmed by local authorities. Ricardo Chilon, an official in the municipality of San Juan, about 800 kilometers north of the capital Lima, said the accident was fatal and that the driver and a child were among the victims.

According to authorities, the van was transporting a total of 19 passengers to the Ciudad de Dios area, near the municipality of San Juan, when the accident occurred.

The causes of the accident are still under investigation. Road accidents are common in Peru due to the poor state of road infrastructure, worn-out vehicles, lack of controls and high speeds.

According to official data, more than 3,000 people died in road accidents in Peru last year. /CNA
