Andy Burnham has been officially declared the new leader of the United Kingdom's Labour Party, paving the way for him to take over as prime minister on Monday, following the resignation of Keir Starmer. Burnham received the support of 379 of the 403 Labour MPs in the House of Commons.

Burnham was the only candidate in the party leadership race and was confirmed during a special conference held in central London.

In his first speech as leader, Burnham declared that he is ready to lead and continue the work on the foundations laid by his predecessor, Keir Starmer.

"I am ready to lead the party and build on the foundations laid by Keir Starmer. Under his leadership we went from the heaviest defeat to one of the greatest victories in our history ," Burnham said, praising the achievements of the Labour government, such as strengthening Britain's international role.

He stressed that the current generation of politicians has failed to change a political culture and an economic model that, in his opinion, does not work well enough for ordinary people.

Burnham promised an "authentically Labour" government, with a focus on economic revitalization, reindustrialization, increased public control over services, and decentralization of power from London to the regions.

He also said he has not yet decided on the composition of his cabinet, but stated that the leadership team will include representatives from all wings of the Labor Party, with the aim of strengthening internal unity. /CNA
