Tourism on the rise/ Cost of living challenges vacations for Albanians

INSTAT statistics for May show an increase in tourism, with the number of visitors to accommodation structures increasing by 12.4% compared to the same period last year.

This influx, led by a 12.7% increase in non-resident visitors, has led to an increase in demand for hotels and services, driving room occupancy to 29.8%, compared to 28.7% in May 2025.

As the tourism industry grapples with these figures, the cost of this success to local citizens is being questioned.

The main problem lies in the rising cost of services, a fact that is turning the coast into an increasingly difficult destination for Albanian families to afford.

The South region remains the most sought-after, where the number of non-resident visitors increased from 71,351 in May 2025 to 83,195 in May 2026. This high concentration of foreign visitors, especially from Italy, Kosovo and Germany, has dictated a market orientation towards international prices.

This trend becomes even more evident when we observe the digital market. A simple search on the Booking or Airbnb platforms for accommodation structures in the southern coastal areas is enough to understand the significant increase in prices, where often the ratio between cost and quality of service provided is not justified.

The success of tourism should not depend only on how many foreigners visit our country. Real tourism should also give Albanians the opportunity to enjoy the beauties of their country, without being forced to spend amounts they cannot afford./ CNA
