WHO warns Europe: Threat from heat, 30% more mortality in the last 20 years

The World Health Organization described extreme heat in Europe as an urgent and growing threat to public health that is expected to hit harder each year.

Data from five countries on the continent already show nearly 10,000 deaths linked to extreme heat this summer.

"Our region is the fastest-warming region globally. In the last four years alone, heat has claimed more than 200,000 lives, while heat-related mortality has increased by 30 percent over the past 20 years," said Dr. Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe.

Kluge stressed that heat-related deaths are not inevitable, while suggesting preparing health systems before temperatures peak in the coming days.

Europe is the fastest-warming continent on the planet, with temperatures rising at roughly twice the global average, putting increasing pressure on health systems, social care services and communities already facing more frequent and intense heatwaves./CNA
