Coral reefs could become an essential part of the path to helping combat global hunger and improve nutrition around the world.
According to UNICEF data, about 2.3 billion people experienced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2024, 336 million more than in 2019.
At the same time, many reef fish populations have declined as a result of overfishing, while climate-driven warming has caused "unprecedented" coral bleaching.
However, new research from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) says that rebuilding these reserves and managing them at a sustainable level is still feasible and could be a solution to addressing malnutrition.
Increasing coral reef fish yields could feed millions of people.
The study, published in the journal PNAS, analyzed data from all territories around the world that contain coral reefs, including the Dominican Republic, Panama, Jamaica, Kenya, Mauritius, Oman, Jamaica, Madagascar, the Philippines and Indonesia. /CNA
