Rio de Janeiro has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the host of the largest New Year's Eve celebration in the world.

The certification was awarded a few days before the city's annual New Year's Eve, during a ceremony on the waterfront, attended by Mayor Eduardo Paes and Guinness representative Camila Borenstein.

The record recognizes not only the number of participants, but also the scale, artistic output, and cultural significance of the event.

Guinness said the verification process involved a comprehensive review of official records, aerial imagery and drone counts to confirm participation.

The organization also cited Rio's ability to implement safety protocols, sustainability measures and large-scale logistics on a densely populated urban coastline.

City officials said the 2.5 million figure refers only to Copacabana and does not include crowds at other New Year's celebrations across Rio, where additional stages and concerts usually draw millions more.
