Trump imposes 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, Carney: We will intensify trade

United States President Donald Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on a wide range of goods imported from Canada, accusing Ottawa of unfair treatment of American products, including vehicles, dairy products and alcoholic beverages.

According to the White House, the new tariffs will take effect within 30 days and will affect everyday consumer goods, such as wine and hockey sticks, as well as industrial products, including cement. However, some strategic Canadian exports, such as energy, potash, critical minerals and fish, are exempt from the measures.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by stating that his government is ready to intensify trade talks with the US in the coming weeks, with the aim of avoiding a further escalation of the dispute.

The new tariffs also apply to goods covered by the United States–Canada–Mexico Agreement (USMCA), which constitutes another blow to trade relations between the two countries.

In a statement, Carney described the American measures as unilateral actions that contradict the spirit of the trade agreement, while also mentioning "threats to Canadian sovereignty," referring to Trump's previous statements about annexing Canada as the 51st state of the US.

The Trump administration argues that Canada discriminates against American exports through tariffs on vehicles and their parts, restrictions on dairy imports and a boycott of American alcoholic beverages in some provinces.

On the other hand, Canada continues to maintain 25% tariffs on certain American imports, including steel, aluminum and vehicles, while negotiators from both countries are trying to reach an agreement to lower trade barriers.

Business representatives in the US and Canada have called for dialogue, warning that the new tariffs could escalate the trade war and have consequences for the economies of both countries./ CNA
