Scientists name 190 new species of plants and fungi

Almost 200 new plants and fungi were named new to science last year, with environmentalists warning that many of them are already threatened with extinction.

The Royal Botanic Gardens, in London, along with its international partners, have revealed their top 10 species that were described in 2025. The list aims to highlight how much of the natural world still remains unnamed.

"Describing new species of plants and fungi is essential at a time when the impacts of biodiversity loss and climate change are accelerating before our eyes. It is difficult to protect what we do not know, do not understand and do not have a scientific name for," says Dr. Martin Cheek, senior research leader on the study team. 

Dr. Cheek adds that everywhere his team looks, human activities are eroding nature to the point of extinction and argues that by not investing in taxonomy, that is, the classification of species, we risk dismantling the very systems that support our life on Earth. /CNA
