Rare collection of Iron Age artifacts discovered in Scotland

An extraordinary collection of Iron Age artefacts has been discovered in West Norfolk, shedding new light on ancient British culture.

The treasure, discovered during a routine archaeological dig by Pre-Construct Archaeology, includes a nearly complete Iron Age battle trumpet, known as a carnyx, and parts of another.

These animal-headed bronze instruments were used by Celtic tribes across Europe to inspire warriors in battle and fascinated the Romans, who often depicted them as war trophies.

The treasure also includes a boar's head made of bronze, originally from a military standard, five shield bosses and an iron object of unknown origin.

According to Dr. Fraser Hunter, Curator of the Iron Age and Rome at the National Museums of Scotland, this rare discovery will add greatly to our understanding of the period and the full research and conservation of these extremely fragile remains will reshape the view of sound and music in the Iron Age.
