Scientists have linked the burning of fossil fuels to the ongoing acidification of the ocean.
Sharks are the most fearsome predators in the sea, and their survival depends on their fearsome teeth that regenerate throughout their lives. But changes in ocean chemistry could put these weapons at risk.
That's the conclusion of a study conducted by a group of German scientists who tested the effects of a more acidic ocean on shark teeth. Scientists have linked human activities, including the burning of coal, oil and gas, to the ongoing acidification of the ocean.
As oceans become increasingly acidic, shark teeth may become structurally weaker and more prone to breakage, scientists have found. This could change the status of the big fish at the top of the ocean food chain.
The ocean won't become populated with toothless sharks overnight, says the study's lead author, Maximilian Baum, a marine biologist at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. But the possibility of weaker teeth is a new risk for sharks that already face pollution, overfishing, climate change and other threats. /CNA
