A new study finds that rising temperatures are causing Antarctic penguins to breed earlier, threatening some species with extinction by the end of the century.
Rising temperatures are forcing Antarctic penguins to breed earlier, a major problem for two of the species facing extinction by the end of the century, a study has said.
"Penguins are changing the timing of their breeding at a record rate, faster than any other vertebrate. And that's important because the timing of your breeding has to coincide with the timing of most resources in the environment, and that's mainly food for your chicks, so they have enough to grow," said lead author Ignacio Juarez Martinez, a biologist at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
With breeding ground temperatures rising by 3 degrees Celsius from 2012 to 2022, three different penguin species are starting their reproductive process about two weeks earlier than the previous decade, according to a study in the Journal of Animal Ecology. /CNA
