Climate change is causing a wave of shark attacks

Several unprovoked shark attacks have occurred on Australia's east coast, with some serious incidents, including a tragic case of a 12-year-old boy who died after an attack.

Rising air temperatures cause the atmosphere to hold more moisture and cause heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfall affects the amount of fresh water that flows into the sea, changing the temperature, salinity, and visibility of the water near the coast. These environmental changes can attract sharks such as bull sharks to coastal areas.

Flooded river waters filled with food debris from the river's flow, along with changes in livestock habitat due to urbanization, make these areas more attractive for sharks to feed on, and they pursue these prey.

Many of the attacks classified as unprovoked are the result of "misidentification," as they sometimes grasp or explore objects in the water using non-visual senses, not because they are hostile towards us.

What is being observed is a combination of climate, environmental and human behavior that are altering conditions in their habitat. To reduce risk, it is important to understand these factors and not ignore the contribution of the environment and climate change to the dynamics of the marine ecosystem. /CNA
