The first writing may be 40,000 years earlier than previously thought

Researchers have discovered that the history of writing may be tens of thousands of years older than previously believed. Objects found in caves in southern Germany, dating back as far as 45,000 years, bear carved patterns of dots, crosses and slashes, which could be primitive forms of communication.

Traditionally, historians have considered the proto-cuneiform scripts of Mesopotamia, about 5,000 years younger, to be the first written words. But the finds at Lonetal and Geißenklösterle show that Stone Age people used symbols to convey meaning and messages.

“Stone Age sign sequences appear to have functioned as an early symbolic system, parallel to the much later proto-cuneiform writing,” said Prof. Christian Bentz of Saarland University. Ewa Dutkiewicz of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Berlin added that these artifacts show that hunter-gatherers had high artistic skills and that communication was an important part of their lives.

The researchers analyzed over 3,000 signs on 260 objects and discovered repetitive patterns and predictability in the rows of symbols, a feature that brings these artifacts closer to early Mesopotamian writing.

The discovery challenges previous knowledge about the origins of writing and suggests that Stone Age people were more sophisticated in communication than previously thought. The study is published in the journal PNAS./ CNA
