'Ghost' jellyfish filmed by researchers in the deep sea near Argentina

During an underwater scientific expedition near the southern coast of Argentina, researchers recorded an extraordinary sight, a very rare type of jellyfish, known as the giant ghost jellyfish (Stygiomedusa gigantea), moving in the waters of the South Atlantic.

The jellyfish was filmed about 75-250 meters below the surface of the water in the Atlantic Ocean, as part of an expedition that applied remote-operated vehicle (ROV) technology to explore the depths of the sea.

This jellyfish is extremely large, described in comparative terms as being as long as a 'school bus'.

It can reach up to about 11 meters in length. It has a large body and four long, ribbon-like arms that it uses to capture food, mainly plankton and small fish, as it does not have stinging tentacles like some other types of jellyfish.

This species is called the "ghost jellyfish" because it usually lives in very deep areas of the ocean, in what is called the "midnight zone", in complete darkness, an environment where light does not reach widely.

So far, only about 120-130 species of this jellyfish have been reported since 1899, making any sighting of it a very rare scientific find.

Such views help scientists better understand deep marine ecosystems, an environment that covers most of the Earth but is still relatively unknown.

This expedition has also discovered many other types of organisms and new biological zones, giving science a clearer picture of the ocean's biodiversity. /CNA
