The universe was recreated by a massive computer simulation

Scientists have carried out one of the most detailed simulations ever of the history of the universe, recreating its evolution from about 12 million years after the Big Bang to the present day, nearly 14 billion years later.

The project, known as the "Illustris Collaboration," encompasses everything from supernova explosions to galaxy formation, supermassive black holes and the distribution of dark matter that creates the "cosmic web" of the universe.

Six months of work with supercomputers

The simulation was processed for six months on powerful supercomputers, a process that would have taken a normal computer about 2,000 years.

Astrophysicist Mark Vogelsberger from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), part of the research team, explains that in astronomy, laboratory experiments cannot be conducted with the universe, so such simulations are the best way to test scientific theories.

How accurate is the model?

Scientists compared the simulation with real images from the Hubble Space Telescope and found striking agreement. However, some discrepancies show that there is still much to be understood about how galaxies and stars form.

Currently, the smallest details the model can show are structures about 1,000 light-years across. In the future, technology may allow for even more detailed simulations./ CNA
