The fire that engulfed the Sierra Bermeja area in the province of Malaga is considered by experts to be a sixth-generation fire, one of the most dangerous and uncontrollable forms of forest fires.

According to forest management specialists, this type of fire is the result of a combination of three main factors: urbanization near forest areas, the abandonment of traditional forest management, and the impact of climate change. The combination of these creates extreme conditions that make fire behave unpredictably.

A fire that creates its own "weather"

Sixth generation fires are distinguished because they develop a strong convective process, creating so-called pyrocumulus clouds. In these cases, flames can exceed three meters in height and temperatures become so high that air intervention loses its effectiveness.

Experts emphasize that, under these conditions, the fire cannot be completely controlled, but only managed strategically to minimize damage and protect human lives. Its extinguishing often depends on changing weather conditions.

A well-known but growing phenomenon

Similar incidents have been recorded before in Europe, including the tragic fire in Pedrógão Grande in Portugal in 2017 and the fire in Doñana National Park the same year. However, the increase in construction at the forest-city interface is exacerbating the situation, turning each incident into a civil protection crisis.

The need for preventive measures

Experts are calling for a return to active forest management, the creation of firebreaks and more careful urban planning. They warn that if the current trend of global warming and rural abandonment continues, fires of this nature could become more frequent in the coming decades.
