In the city of Dijon, France, archaeologists have discovered five very old skeletons, which were buried in an unusual way; sitting upright and facing west.
The skeletons were found near an elementary school and are located sitting at the bottom of a circular pit, with their hands in their laps and their heads turned to the west.

This position is very rare for ancient burials, where bodies are usually lying down.
So far, it is believed that the skeletons date back to around 300–200 BC and belong to the Iron Age period.
The skeletons are related to the ancient Gallic people, mainly adult men, while a child skeleton was also found.

Scientists still don't know why the skeletons were buried like this, but some theories are that it may be related to some religious or ceremonial ritual, while there is also the possibility that they were buried alive.
Only about 75 such tombs have been found worldwide. The Dijon area contains a large number of them and suggests that it was an important Gallic center./CNA
