Astronomers discover a 'dark galaxy' in outer space

Astronomers have identified with the help of the Hubble Space Telescope an extremely unusual object in outer space: a very faint galaxy that appears to be composed almost entirely of dark matter, with only a few visible stars.

The CDG-2 galaxy is hidden within the Perseus galaxy cluster, about 300 million light-years from Earth.

CDG-2 is a very sparsely populated galaxy, shining as brightly as about 6 million Moons combined, making it much dimmer than our own galaxy. It was discovered not by starlight, but by identifying a tight cluster of four globular star clusters that serve as clues to a galactic body behind it.

Studies show that about 99% of the mass of this galaxy appears to be dark matter, a substance that does not reflect, emit or block light and is visible only through its gravitational influence. /CNA
