8 special astronomical events you can watch during March 2026

As part of the solar system, Earth is always putting on interesting celestial shows. And, events in March are filled with wonders all the time, from a parade of planets and a total lunar eclipse to a magnificent planetary conjunction.

1. Total lunar eclipse-March 3

On the morning of March 3, the Moon will pass completely into the Earth's shadow and turn a rosy/"Blood Moon." This is one of the most visible eclipses and the main event of the month.

2. Venus-Saturn conjunction, March 7-8

Venus and Saturn will appear very close to each other after sunset around March 7 and 8. This is an interesting coincidence that will be easily seen even with binoculars.

3. New Moon and Zodiacal Vibration-March 19

On March 19th, there will be a New Moon, an ideal time to observe distant objects because the sky will be very dark. It also increases the chance of seeing the zodiacal flicker, a subtle glow that appears after sunset, due to sunlight scattering off dust particles between the planets.

4. Spring Equinox, March 20

On March 20, at 10:46 a.m. ET, the spring equinox begins in the Northern Hemisphere (and the autumn equinox in the Southern Hemisphere). This period also brings better opportunities for northern lights (aurora borealis) in some northern areas.

5. Moon near the Pleiades, March 22

On March 22, a thin moon will pass near the Pleiades star cluster, creating a beautiful view after sunset.

6. Jupiter and the Moon, March 26–27

On the evenings of March 26 and 27, the Moon and Jupiter will appear very close together in the southwest, a perfect photo opportunity.

 7. The moon passes in front of the star Regulus - March 29

On March 29, the Moon will pass in front of the star Regulus in the constellation Leo, an interesting celestial phenomenon where the star temporarily disappears behind the edges of the Moon.

8. Milky Way Core - all month long

Also during March, the core of the Milky Way will be most visible before dawn, a spectacular sight for those who view the sky very early in the morning. /CNA
