According to a British study published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Psychology, historic buildings can have a major impact on how people perceive the beauty of an urban environment.

The study shows that old and architecturally significant buildings create positive emotions in people, such as: a sense of calm, a sense of stability, and even admiration or "awe."

Although most research on well-being has focused on natural landscapes, this study also analyzed urban environments and the impact of different types of buildings on them.

The researchers analyzed 28,547 ratings from people for photos of cities in England, 3,843 photos of urban areas, data for about 370,000 British buildings.

People who participated in the study rated urban views on a scale from 1 (not at all beautiful) to 10 (very beautiful).

The results showed that the presence of a historic building in an urban area increases the assessment of beauty by an average of about 25%; the aesthetic effect is similar to that of forests and lakes on people's perception; older buildings and those with greater historical importance are valued more.

According to researchers and architects, people are drawn to historic buildings because they tell stories and memories of the past, create a sense of nostalgia, and provide a sense of continuity and identity for the city.
