Scientists: Over 200,000 hectares of Europe's forests could be damaged by

A new study warns that more than 216,000 hectares of forests in Europe could be damaged each year by 2100, even if global warming is limited to around 2°C.

The study, published in the scientific journal Science and with the participation of researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, analyzes the risks that are threatening European forests.

Scientists say several factors related to climate change are increasing forest damage: Forest fires, severe storms, outbreaks of insect pests.

These phenomena are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change.

Between 1986 and 2020, around 180,000 hectares of forests were lost annually in Europe. By the end of the century, this could increase to 216,000 hectares per year, even if the climate stabilizes.

In a worst-case scenario (with greater temperature increases), damage could reach about 370,000 hectares per year.

The study says that Southern and Western Europe are expected to experience the greatest changes in forests. Although Northern Europe may be less affected overall, problem areas are expected there too./CNA
