Famous chefs call for ban on eating eels

A growing number of Michelin-starred celebrity chefs have removed eels from their menus and are making public calls to stop eating eels, comparing their plight to that of pandas, a rare species.

Olivier Roellinger, a former three-Michelin-starred chef, said that if pandas were not placed on restaurant menus because of their grave threat status, eels should not be served either, because the European eel population is in much greater danger.

In recent decades, the number of eels in rivers and lakes in Europe has declined by around 90%, mainly due to overfishing, habitat loss, pollution and barriers to their migration.

However, eel fishing and trade remain legal in the EU, and the species is still used in the traditional cuisines of countries such as France and Spain, where eel is considered a delicacy.

The campaign called "Anguille, non merci" ("Eel, no thanks") has the support of thousands of chefs, such as Thierry Marx, Mauro Colagreco, and restaurant associations such as Relais & Chateaux, with the aim of promoting changes in consumption habits and policies to protect the species. /CNA
