US proposes 24-karat gold coin with President Trump's image

A 24-karat gold coin featuring Donald Trump has been proposed to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Its design has been approved by a federal art panel, but still needs final approval from other bodies before production.

What does the coin look like?

On one side: Trump's portrait, based on an official photo.

On the other side: an American eagle, the national symbol.

How much might it cost?

The price is not final, but similar gold coins usually cost the value of the gold plus the premium collection price.

Previous examples of Trump coins have sold for thousands of dollars, often above the actual value of the gold.

It would be a rare occasion for a sitting president to be featured on a U.S. coin. The project has received support, but also criticism, especially over the way approval is being processed. /CNA
