Oil prices rise after Trump says Iranian ship seized

Global oil prices rose on Monday morning in Asian trading after President Donald Trump said the US had detained and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship.

This came after Iran said on Saturday that it was closing the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping again and that any ship approaching it would be targeted.

Brent crude futures rose 4.74% to $94.66 (£70.11) a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude was 5.6% higher at $88.55.

Energy markets have seen huge swings since the US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28 and Tehran responded with threats to target ships in the strait, through which about 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) passes./ CNA, translated by BBC
