North Korea continues "show of force"/ Launches missiles into the sea

North Korea has been urged to "stop provocative acts" after launching missiles from its east coast in the early hours of this morning. The missiles were launched from the city of Sinpo and flew about 90 miles into the Sea of ??Japan, according to South Korea's military.

This is the fourth missile launch by North Korea this month and the seventh this year, and comes amid a rise in tensions since the start of the war with Iran.

Experts have stated that Pyongyang's missile activity is intended to showcase its self-defense capabilities in an attempt to gain international influence.

According to international media, it is not yet clear what type of ballistic missiles were fired on Sunday, however Sinpo is home to several submarines and equipment for testing submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

Officials have warned that war with Iran could boost Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions. North Korea has made "very serious" advances in its ability to produce nuclear weapons, with the possible addition of a new uranium enrichment plant, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, warned on Wednesday.

Late last month, Kim Jong Un said Pyongyang's status as a nuclear-armed state was irreversible and the expansion of a self-defensive nuclear force was essential for national security.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in holding talks with the North Korean leader when he visits Asia next month. /CNA
