Screen breaks/Children spend hours in the virtual world

2026-06-04 15:38:00, Sociale CNA

For many children and teenagers, the long summer holidays have turned into a non-stop marathon in front of screens. Freedom from school schedules and homework has quickly been replaced by the light of smartphones, tablets and video games, locking them within the four walls of the house.

In the absence of a daily routine, children are spending an alarming number of hours isolated in the virtual world. What should have been time for outdoor play and physical interaction is being spent endlessly scrolling through social media or consuming other content from the internet. Sleep schedules are completely disrupted, as spending time in front of devices often extends into the late hours of the night.

Psychologists point out that this prolonged stay during the summer causes serious physical and psychological consequences. Constant exposure to the light of screens increases drowsiness, damages eyesight and significantly increases social anxiety. Children's brains are kept in a state of overload, which explains the high irritation and nervousness when they are asked to turn off the devices or go outside.

Working parents find it almost impossible to control this addiction. Left alone at home for hours, children ignore any rules or time limits previously established. In the absence of alternatives to engage in summer camps or physical activities, the screen becomes the only means with which they fill their long day.

Experts are calling for immediate intervention to break this harmful routine. Bringing back traditional games, reading books and outdoor walks are essential for their development. Summer vacations should serve as real mental and physical relaxation, and not as a return to a real digital captivity. /CNA
