5 ways to cut food costs as prices rise

The effects of inflation are being felt everywhere in the world, and especially during grocery shopping.

Significantly higher prices are being observed for basic foods, which burden every buyer's budget.

However, there are ways to help lower food spending and still have good, nutritious food on the table.

1. Make a plan

This is hard to pin down, but planning helps you save money for many reasons. Making a grocery list helps you avoid impulse purchases that add up. You're more likely to use what you buy and what you already have on hand, which helps keep costs down even further.

Having a dinner plan, plus a few lunches and breakfasts, for the week also helps you cook more at home and cut out takeout or other more expensive options on busy days. It doesn't have to be complicated, but having a few recipes written down and then buying those ingredients is a great strategy to help you save money at the store.

2. Be selective with products

Some foods may seem expensive, but there are ways to spend more money and still get the right amount of nutrients that produce provides. Choosing frozen, canned, or dried fruits and vegetables is a great way to save money and get vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants into your diet. Look for options that have less added sugars and salt.

3. Always follow discounts and offers

Some of us are already adept at perusing the weekly sale flyers. But if you don't currently do, it's not too late to start. Most grocery stores offer store-wide discounts. First, take a look at what's on sale, then add some of those foods to your meal plan for the week.

4. Review the products in your pantry and refrigerator

Sometimes, when it seems like there's nothing to eat in the house, there is. Going back to what you have before making a list and shopping can help you save money by using what you have. It may take a little more effort, but using these items to make a meal can help keep costs down.

5. Change store

Many of us are loyal to the grocery store, but switching can help you save on your grocery bill. Depending on the discounts, you may want to change where you shop. Additionally, some grocery stores only carry certain foods for less, not just big box stores. Even discount stores will have some basic food items at great prices./CNA
