Report from the European Center for Disease Prevention: Syphilis and gonorrhea

According to new data released this Thursday by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, sexually transmitted bacterial infections, including syphilis and gonorrhea, are reaching record levels across Europe.

"Sexually transmitted infections have been on the rise for 10 years and reached record levels in 2024. Untreated, these infections can cause serious complications, such as chronic pain and infertility, and, in the case of syphilis, problems with the heart or nervous system," said Bruno Ciancio, Director of the Unit, Communicable and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases at ECDC.

Recent data show that notifications of gonorrhea and syphilis, along with congenital syphilis, reached their highest levels in more than a decade, reflecting sustained transmission in many countries.

Gonorrhea cases reached 106,331, a 303% increase since 2015, and syphilis cases doubled during the same period to 45,577 cases. Chlamydia remains the most frequently reported STI, with 213,443 cases, the report found. /.CNA
