Charlie Kirk's family confronts alleged perpetrator

The family of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk came face to face with his suspected killer on Monday as prosecutors presented their evidence in the murder case against Tyler Robinson, 23, at a preliminary hearing.

Kirk, a key Trump ally and founder of the youth organization Turning Point USA, was shot dead on September 10, 2025, while giving a speech on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, sparking an intense manhunt for him.

Authorities announced the arrest two days later of Robinson, who has been charged with aggravated murder, use of a firearm, obstruction of justice and witness tampering.

Robinson has not yet pleaded guilty. Utah District Attorneys are seeking the death penalty.

The family of Kirk, a 31-year-old father of two, issued a statement to local media ahead of Monday's hearing, which is scheduled to last until Friday.

"Charlie was a loving husband, son, brother, friend and father," said Kirk's widow, Erika, his parents, Robert and Kathryn, and sister, Mary. "Each court hearing serves as a painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irrevocably impacted our lives and the lives of his children."

Kirk's parents and widow arrived at court separately on Monday.

"We remain deeply grateful for the support, prayers and kindness we have received," the family's statement continued. "This support has sustained us through the darkest days of our lives.

"Out of respect for the legal process, we will not comment further at this time. We ask for privacy as we deal with this process and our great grief."

Defense attorneys in previous hearings have sought to exclude various pieces of evidence and have tried unsuccessfully to block cameras from the courtroom during preliminary hearings that began Monday. They have also asked Judge Tony Graf to remove the death penalty from the table.

Robinson, dressed in a light-colored suit, sat among his lawyers at the defense table.
