Super typhoon hits Pacific islands in the US/ Extensive damage reported

Super Typhoon Bavi has hit the US Pacific territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, bringing heavy rain and very strong winds. Local authorities have reported significant damage.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the super typhoon made landfall on Monday on Rota Island, the southernmost island in the Mariana Islands. At the time of impact, Bavi had winds of up to 290 km/h.

Meteorologists warn that catastrophic damage is expected near the center of the storm, including the destruction of homes, downed trees and power poles, as well as power outages that could last for weeks or even months.

Authorities have urged residents of Rota to immediately seek shelter in safe areas, comparing the danger to the approach of a tornado.

Flash flood warnings have also been issued for the islands of Saipan and Tinian, while roads in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands have been emptied as residents have followed instructions to stay in shelters.

Shops and businesses have been closed and boarded up ahead of the storm's arrival. According to local officials, flooding and extensive property damage have already been reported in Rota.

The region has yet to fully recover from Super Typhoon Sinlaku, which struck in April and left thousands of families without electricity, while many residents continue to live in temporary shelters.

Experts point out that record ocean temperatures and the El Niño climate phenomenon are favoring the formation of more powerful tropical storms and more rainfall, increasing the risk of extreme weather events in the Pacific region. /CNA
