Hungary moves towards impeachment of president/ Orbán's ally's

Hungary's new government, led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, has submitted to Parliament a constitutional amendment aimed at terminating the mandate of the current president, Tamás Sulyok. The president is seen by the new government as a close ally of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and a key obstacle in the country's so-called de-Orbánization process.

Although he was elected by the previous legislature and has more than two years of his term remaining, Sulyok has consistently refused to resign voluntarily.

Prime Minister Magyar argues that the president's veto powers could block the deep reforms the government has planned after its landslide victory in April's elections. According to him, the reconstruction of the Hungarian state cannot begin if a figure who supported past policies remains at its helm.

For this reason, it is planned that a new president will be elected during the summer with a five-year term, or a temporary term until the adoption of a new constitution, discussions on which will begin in September.

In addition to interfering with the institution of the presidency, the new constitutional amendment also provides for significant changes in the justice and financial systems.

The government is seeking to impose term limits on Constitutional Court judges, a measure that would also lead to the removal of the court's president, Péter Polt. Meanwhile, the Fiscal Council will be stripped of its veto power over the state budget, giving the government a freer hand in managing public finances.
