"It is not in my interest to debate with Trump"/ Pope Leo XIV: I will

Pope Leo XIV spoke today about his "replies" with US President Donald Trump over the Iran war, saying his comments were misinterpreted.

In a statement to reporters aboard his flight to Angola, the third leg of his 10-day tour of Africa, the Holy Father said a comment he made in Cameroon earlier this week that the world was being "destroyed by a handful of tyrants" was not directed at Trump.

"It was seen as if I was trying to debate the president, which is not in my interest at all. Most of what has been written since then has been more commentary on commentary, trying to interpret what was said," the Pope told reporters.

On the other hand, the Head of the Roman Catholic Church said he would continue to preach the Gospel message of peace, reconciliation and building bridges and that he would not hesitate to speak out against war. The Pope said his speech in Cameroon had been prepared two weeks ago, long before Trump described him as “soft on crime and terrible on foreign policy.”

Meanwhile, during his visit to Angola, the Pope is expected to meet with President Joao Lourenco before addressing the oil-rich country's political leaders.

Pope Leo's tour of Africa began Monday in Algeria, and continued with Cameroon. After Angola, the Pope will go to Equatorial Guinea. The tour is one of the most intensive ever organized for a Pope, with stops in 11 cities and towns in four countries. /CNA
