Marilyn Monroe was born on June 1, 1926. Today, 100 years later, her face is everywhere: on posters, fashion campaigns, products, and in the work of artists who have never stopped returning to her image.

As photographer Bert Stern observed shortly after her death: "She's gone, but she's everywhere."

Monroe created and refined her public image and welcomed the creativity of her associates, while privately devoting herself to self-improvement. Her friend, singer Ella Fitzgerald, noted that Monroe was "ahead of her time".

She read widely, studied her craft, engaged with political issues, and challenged the systems of Hollywood and 1950s society. She recognized the importance of her loyal fans above all else.

“If I am a star,” Monroe remarked late in her life, “the people made me a star. No studio, no person, but the people did.”

Monroe crystallized a certain vision of 1950s femininity that matched the decade's ambivalent attitude toward female independence, fascinated by yet wary of increasingly public displays of women's sexuality.

On the centennial of Monroe's birth, what remains are the images. They are the iconic moments from her films, most famously the white skirt billowing over a subway train in "The Seven Year Itch" (1955). They are the photographs captured by famous figures like Richard Avedon and Eve Arnold, and the artwork she inspired by equally iconic artists like Andy Warhol.
