"From a knitting course to a tourist attraction"/ Spanish grandmothers

A creative idea started by some elderly women in Spain has become one of the most unique solutions against the summer heat.

It all started in 2018 in the town of Alhaurín de la Torre, where crochet teacher Eva Pacheco, together with a group of grandmothers, decided to create giant crochet blankets to protect the streets from high temperatures.

Instead of heat-retaining plastic tents, they created colorful roofs made of sun-resistant fibers, turning the city into an open-air "art gallery."

According to reports, these covers manage to lower the temperature by up to 5°C in shaded areas, while at the same time bringing in more tourists and inspiring other cities in Spain to follow the same idea.

Images of streets covered in colorful motifs have gone viral on social media, being hailed as one of the most creative and artistic solutions for the climate. /CNA
