Albanians most tired at work/ 43 hours a week, more stress and social isolation

Albanians are officially the hardest working people in Europe, but this amount of hours is not translating into wealth, but into massive social fatigue. According to the latest data published by Eurostat, Albanian citizens spend an average of over 43 hours per week at work.

This is the highest figure on the continent, far exceeding the European Union average, which hovers around 36 hours a week. They wake up early, come home late and often, Sunday is not a day off.

But beyond the economic statistics, the heaviest bill is being paid in social and psychological terms. Sociologists and mental health experts report a worrying increase in what is known as burnout syndrome.

This chronic fatigue results not only from long hours, but also from job insecurity, pressures to maintain a position, and salaries that often do not cover basic living costs, forcing many individuals to work two jobs.

The impact on family structure is direct. Data from various social studies in the country show that the quality time that parents spend with their children has been drastically reduced.

Physical and mental exhaustion leaves individuals without energy for socializing, cultural or recreational activities. This lack of work-life balance is creating a more isolated, less tolerant society with high levels of daily stress.

International institutions, such as the International Labor Organization, have consistently emphasized that long hours do not necessarily lead to higher productivity, but increase the risk of occupational accidents and decreased performance.

The real challenge for our society is not simply finding a job, but building a market that respects the time and well-being of the individual. There can be no sustainable development when its engine is an overworked society.

If we do not change our approach, we will continue to break European records for working hours, but at the cost of irreparable costs to our health and families./ CNA
