"A woman should be at the helm"/ Pedro Sanchez calls for UN reform

The "In Defense of Democracy" summit was held in Barcelona, ??where leaders from more than 15 countries came together, positioning the Spanish city at the center of discussions on democracy and global governance.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who was the event's organizer, opened the summit with a message: "Democracy cannot be taken for granted."

During his speech, Sanchez called for an urgent reform of the United Nations. The Spanish leader stressed that the current multilateral system no longer reflects modern global realities and risks becoming ineffective if it is not reformed.

"The multilateral system needs urgent renewal. It will only survive if it adapts to represent today's world," Sanchez said.

He also proposed appointing a woman as the next UN Secretary-General, calling this a necessary step towards modernization and representation.

The summit in Barcelona, ??where Prime Minister Edi Rama was also present, took place amid rising geopolitical tensions and growing concerns about democratic regression, inequality, and disinformation around the world.

The leaders aimed to strengthen international cooperation and present a unified response to the rise of extremism and authoritarian tendencies. /CNA
