Agents of the National Drug Control Directorate in the Dominican Republic have seized a shipment of approximately 1.6 tons of cocaine. The narcotic substance, divided into 1,670 packages, was seized off the coast of the Pedernales province, while the seizure operation was accompanied by high tensions and exchanges of fire between traffickers and authorities.

In a press conference, agency spokesman Carlos Devers announced that the operation was launched after receiving intelligence reports about an "Eduardono" type ship that had entered the country's waters. The operation involved a combined force of naval, air and land units.

Devers said that when they found themselves stranded, the ship's crew increased speed and went ashore near Playa Blanca, a community in Trudille.

Then, upon disembarking from the ship, the traffickers opened fire on the army and officers involved, and after the confrontation, in which no injuries have been reported so far, they managed to escape by entering the forest area of ??the Jaragua National Park.

Once the area was secured, teams inspected the 32-meter-long vessel, where 1,670 packages of the substance and fuel canisters, as well as advanced communications equipment, were found inside.

"These are criminal organizations that use drug-carrying ships with advanced technology to bring in large loads from South America ," Devers explained.

Devers stated that, so far in 2026, more than 10 tons of drugs have been seized. This reinforces the leadership of the Dominican Republic in the fight against transnational organized crime in the Caribbean region.

He indicated that currently, the packages have been sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) to determine the exact weight and type of substance.

He also added that reconnaissance flights and ground searches are continuing with the aim of catching the fugitives and arresting them. /CNA
