Parliamentary elections in Bulgaria/ Former president on the verge of victory

Rumen Radev's Bulgarian Progressive Party looks set to win Sunday's Bulgarian parliamentary elections, the eighth general election in five years.

With more than 60% of the votes counted, his Progressive Bulgaria (PB) party was leading with 45% of the vote, according to the Central Election Commission - an absolute majority of at least 132 seats in the 240-seat parliament. According to the commission, PB beat the liberal PP-DB coalition, which reached 15%, and the GERB party of former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, which had 13%.

The elections were called after the previous government attempted to pass a controversial budget in December, sparking mass protests which Radev, as president, supported.

"The people rejected the complacency and arrogance of the old parties and did not fall prey to lies and manipulation. I thank them for their trust," Radev said in his victory speech.

He promised to build a strong Bulgaria in a strong Europe.

"What Europe needs now is critical thinking, pragmatic actions and good results, especially to build a new security architecture and... to recover its industrial strength and competitiveness. This will be Bulgaria's main contribution to its European mission," he said.

Radev, 62, is seen as a pragmatic and somewhat pro-Russian leader who has criticized EU sanctions and called for constructive dialogue with the Kremlin./CNA, translated by BBC
