An attempted arson attack on a synagogue in London has raised alarm over the safety of the Jewish community, as authorities speak of a series of repeated attacks.

The incident took place overnight in the Harrow area of ??north-west London, where a person attempted to start a fire inside the Kenton United synagogue. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but minor smoke damage was reported inside.

This is not an isolated incident. This week alone, there have been three attacks on Jewish properties in London. Another synagogue was attacked in Finchley, while in Hendon, an attempt was made to burn down a building previously used by a Jewish organization.

It is this situation that has community leaders concerned. The Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom, Sir Ephraim Mirvis, openly said that the attacks are “gaining momentum” and described the latest case as an act of cowardice.

Their concern is that this is not a single incident, but a pattern of attacks that is recurring and increasing in frequency.

Meanwhile, London police have been put on high alert. In areas where the Jewish community lives, patrols, street checks and the presence of armed and counter-terrorism forces have been increased.

Investigations have also been expanded. Authorities are looking into whether these cases are linked and whether we are dealing with attacks motivated by religious hatred. /CNA
