Indonesia school collapse death toll rises to 54

Authorities confirmed that the death toll from last Monday's tragedy has now risen to 54, as the search for dozens of missing people continues.

Hundreds of students, mostly teenagers, had gathered to perform prayers at the Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in East Java when the school, which was under construction, suddenly collapsed.

It is reported that this is the most tragic event this year and at least 13 more victims are expected to be pulled from the rubble. Investigators are looking for the cause, while the most likely clue is that the building's unstable foundations.

Al Khoziny is a traditional Islamic boarding school in Indonesia, also known as a “pesantren.” Many of these “pesantren” operate informally, without strong regulations or ongoing monitoring. It is not clear whether Al Khoziny had permission to undertake additional construction.

Authorities said this week that the shape of the building that collapsed left little room for rescue teams to maneuver to retrieve bodies trapped under the rubble./CNA
