Trump: Hamas will face 'total destruction' if it insists on remaining

President Donald Trump today warned of "total obliteration" if Hamas insists on remaining in power in Gaza.

Trump's statement comes as negotiations to end the bloody war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group are set for this week.

Trump told CNN this action would be taken if the group refuses to relinquish power and control of Gaza, amid ongoing efforts to move forward with his proposed ceasefire plan.

"Total annihilation!" Trump told CNN reporter Jake Tapper.

Hamas said on October 3 that it had agreed to release all Israeli hostages under the terms of Trump's 20-point peace plan for Gaza and is expected to enter mediated negotiations to discuss the details in Egypt.

Gaza would also be redeveloped, according to the text of the proposal, with the possibility for Palestinians who want to stay in the country to stay. Hamas fighters would receive amnesty and the territory would be placed under interim rule by a new Palestinian committee overseen by a "Peace Board."

Trump would personally chair the panel, along with other foreign leaders, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The group also agreed to hand over administration of the Gaza Strip to an independent Palestinian body and said it would be willing to discuss other aspects of Trump's proposal as part of the long-awaited talks. /CNA
