Shooting at University of South Carolina/ 1 dead, 1 injured

Gunshots were reported this Sunday on the campus of South Carolina State University in the US.

The shooting left one person dead and another injured as the facility was hosting homecoming celebrations over the weekend, according to state officials.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said both shootings caused a campus-wide lockdown.

A woman was shot dead in the first incident, the state agency said. In the second shooting, a man was wounded and remains hospitalized.

"The shootings are not believed to be related at this time, however, SLED's investigations are active and ongoing," the agency said in a statement.

U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-South Carolina, said on X that she was heartbroken by the tragic events that occurred at South Carolina State University last night.

"Please join us in prayer for the victims, their families and the entire Bulldog community as they mourn this tragedy," Mace said.

South Carolina State University is the only historically black public university in the state. More than 2,700 students were enrolled at the university last year, according to a fact sheet on the university's website./CNA
