Merz: Germany should boycott Eurovision if Israel is excluded

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that Germany should withdraw from next year's annual Eurovision song contest in Vienna if Israel is excluded.

Asked in an interview with public broadcaster ARD on Sunday whether Germany should voluntarily withdraw from participation in that case, Merz said:

"I would support this. I think it's a scandal that this is even being discussed. Israel has a place there."

The musical spectacle includes countries from Europe, but also beyond, where each country presents a song to compete for the title, which is awarded after evaluation by the national jury and public voting.

Pressure on the festival's organizers has increased in recent weeks, as several broadcasters, including those from Spain, Ireland and the Netherlands, have threatened to withdraw unless Israel is banned from participating, due to the war in the Gaza Strip.

National broadcasters play a crucial role in Eurovision, as they are the official representatives of their countries in the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

The EBU is responsible for selecting the participating songs, coordinating the live broadcasts and overseeing the voting procedures.

The EBU announced late last month that it will hold an online meeting with all member broadcasters in November to vote on participation in the 2026 contest.

The next Eurovision is scheduled to be held in Vienna in May 2026.
