Hashim Thaçi's lawyer, Luka Misetic, in his speech at today's session in The Hague, said that the Prosecution's claim that the KLA General Staff, in the summer of 1998, rejected in every possible way, "ardently" the elected Government of the Democratic League of Kosovo and that they took steps to create "a new Government" is not true.

Regarding the claim that the KLA took steps to create a new government, the lawyer said that the quoted statement addresses new institutions within the framework of negotiations.

Misetic stated that the statement did not claim that the KLA was creating a new government.

 

" We must emphasize that this is incorrect, factually and legally. There was no elected LDK government, there were no elections and there was no LDK government. The LDK was a political party, a non-state group and the so-called elections it held were non-state elections. In fact, the government of Bujar Bukoshi was not even in Kosovo, it was a so-called 'government in exile'. The LDK had no more legitimacy than the KLA to claim the authority they claimed.

"For this, the Prosecution cites political statement number seven. But it is clear that that political statement addresses the issue of the creation of new institutions within the framework of negotiations that would be held with Serbia and mediated by Ambassador [Christopher] Hill. The statement did not claim that the KLA was creating a new Government in itself, and would exclude the LDK ," the lawyer said.
